<div><p>It it my pleasure to welcome <a href="/faculty/nicotra/node/147" rel="nofollow">Alexis Katrina Palau</a> as the first Undergraduate Research Student of the ROCC Lab. </p>
<p>Alexis will be following in Kelly's footsteps for the development of <a href="/faculty/nicotra/node/49" rel="nofollow">Constrained Control Laws for Safe Human-Robot Interactions</a>. Althought the project does have a steep learning curve, Alexis is definetly on the right path for success and I look forward to seeing what she'll achieve over her research internship. </p></div>

<div><p>This video represents a significant milestone in <a href="/faculty/nicotra/node/57" rel="nofollow">Kelly Merckaert</a>'s research on safe Human-Robot Interaction. The control laws used in these experiments were developed during Kelly's 6-month research internship at 缅北禁地, although their implementation on a physical robot had to wait for her to return to the <a href="https://www.brubotics.eu/" rel="nofollow">BruBotics</a> research center in Brussels. The robot is able to operate safely thanks to the use of an Explicit Reference Governor, which guarantees constraint satisfaction while only having a computational footprint of ~1ms.</p><p>This experiment is a significant milestone for the development of computationally inexpensive strategies for the <a href="/faculty/nicotra/node/49" rel="nofollow">Constrained Control for Safe Human-Robot Interaction</a>, and doubles up as a nontrivial validation of the <a href="/faculty/nicotra/research/reference-governors" rel="nofollow">Explicit Reference Governor</a> framework in a highly non-convex setting.</p></div>

These experimental results showcase the interest in implementing an <a href="/faculty/nicotra/research/reference-governors" rel="nofollow">Explicit Reference Governor</a> for real-time constratined control of robotic manipulators and is the first step towards <a href="/faculty/nicotra/node/49" rel="nofollow">Constrained Control for Safe Human-Robot Interaction</a>.</p></div>

<p>Kelly and Bryan did an amazing job on their respective research projects and somehow managed to also squeeze in a few hikes and ski trips along the way.</p>
<p>I hope you will cherish your memories of Colorado for the years to come, and stay assured that the ROCC lab will welcome you with open arms should you ever wish to come back.</p></div>

<div><p>It is my great pleasure to host <a href="/faculty/nicotra/node/57" rel="nofollow">Kelly Merckaert</a> and <a href="/faculty/nicotra/node/55" rel="nofollow">Bryan Convens</a> for a six-month research stay here in 缅北禁地.</p>
<p>Kelly and Bryan conducted their master thesis under my supervision, back when I was still a graduate student at the <a href="http://www.ulb.ac.be/" rel="nofollow">Universit茅 Libre de Bruxelles</a>. I find it fitting that they will now be my first visiting PhD students.</p>
<p>Kelly will be collaborating with the Computer Science department to develop <a href="/faculty/nicotra/node/49" rel="nofollow">Constrained Control Strategies for Safe Human-Robot Interaction</a>.</p>
<p>Bryan will be working in the <a href="/recuv/" rel="nofollow">RECUV</a> flight lab to develop <a href="/faculty/nicotra/node/47" rel="nofollow">Formation Control Strategies for Multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles</a>.</p>
<p>I wish them a fruitful and productive research stay, with the hope that they'll also have the opportunity to explore Colorado.</p></div>
