Wrapping up the spring semester

Dear Infrastructure and Resilience team,

As we conclude the spring semester, I am thrilled about our upcoming Commencement events. Each year, I have the honor of joining the chancellor’s procession, leading the new graduates from Norlin Quad into the stadium. Over the past three years, participating in this procession has filled me with immense pride as I navigate through the jubilant graduates, witnessing their joy firsthand. It is a reminder of the significant impact we in I&R have had on their experiences and achievements.

We still need volunteers for various roles during Commencement and the Give and Go Donation Drive. I am always delighted to see my I&R colleagues supporting these efforts and experiencing this special day. Please coordinate with your supervisor to see if you can volunteer.

Thanks to those of you who took the time to take the Faculty and Staff Engagement Survey. We hope the survey assesses the current state of our workforce and various research-based aspects of engagement, including enthusiasm for work, career satisfaction, institutional pride, intent to remain and connection to �山��'s mission. We will use this information to identify areas for improvement and develop strategies to enhance overall engagement and satisfaction within all of our teams.

Finally, I want to touch on one of my favorite “Extreme Ownership” principles. Decentralized Command involves empowering individuals at all levels to lead and make decisions, not just those in formal leadership roles. As I’ve said before, if you make decisions and interact with others during your work day, you are a leader. This principle is founded on the belief that when everyone is granted the authority and responsibility to lead, the team becomes more adaptable, resilient, and effective, especially in dynamic and uncertain environments.

Decentralized Command empowers the Infrastructure and Resilience team to make decisions and lead at every level, enhancing our adaptability and effectiveness in managing dynamic and uncertain situations. By distributing authority and responsibility, the team can respond swiftly to challenges, ensuring robust infrastructure and sustained resilience.

I hope you’re having a great spring and I look forward to seeing many of you at Commencement.

CU’s 2025/2026 open enrollment: April 21 – May 9

Don't miss out! Open enrollment ends on May 9. During open enrollment, benefits-eligible employees have the opportunity to update or change their benefits plans. All staff should verify their contact information and check the status of their dependents. Review your options and verify your selections today.

Important: the "CU Health Plan - Extended" medical plan is being discontinued

The CU Health Plan – Extended is being discontinued and so Extended Plan members must select a new medical plan in order to maintain medical coverage for plan year 2025-2026. CU Extended Plan members who fail to enroll in a new medical plan will not have medical coverage beginning July 1, so it’s very important for those staff members to login and select a new plan on or before May 9.

CU’s tuition assistance benefit

Tuition Assistance applications for Summer 2025 will open on May 1. The tuition assistance benefit can be used by you, the employee, or you may transfer it to your dependent(s). Employees and dependents can receive up to 12 credits waived per academic year. Dependents of �山�� employees who are �山�� students can receive a 40% discount each semester. Brightest Buffs Recognition Program Launch

�山�� Staff Council is excited to announce the spring 2025 launch of Brightest Buffs, a new initiative starting this spring, designed to highlight the unique and innovative experiences of our diverse staff community. We want to recognize professional experiences that reflect your creativity, contributions, or impact, and we encourage you to share with us!

Take a look at Josh’s murals!

Our talented painter from the structural shop, Josh Bertolini, created 10 masterpieces for a campus customer in the ARCE building, and one (the Flatirons mural) for our FacMan sign shop. Josh's artwork truly showcases his impressive skills. He designed each piece, selected the perfect colors, and then brought them to life on a grand scale. Each mural took him approximately 10 hours to complete. Next time you're in the ARCE building, make sure to swing by the 4th floor (in the section that bridges the front and back buildings) to admire his work. And be sure to stop by the FM paint shop (next to Rich Trujillo’s office) to check out the new Flatiron's mural. View the online gallery.

Campus Sustainability Summit call for award nominations

The annual Campus Sustainability Awards celebrate individuals and departments that demonstrate a commitment to sustainability through programs and initiatives that directly reduce resource use, enhance social equity and cohesion or promote a culture of sustainability at �山��. Awardees will be recognized at the Campus Sustainability Summit, April 22-23, 2025. Nominations are due by March 15.

Save the date for the 32nd Campus Sustainability Summit

The 32nd Annual Campus Sustainability Summit brings the �山�� community together to share, learn and celebrate �山��’s sustainability accomplishments. The two-day event, held April 22-23, 2025, will feature an expo showcasing student projects and ideas for climate solutions, along with panels, workshops, and awards. The Summit is open to all �山�� students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Sustainability Council campus listening session

The Sustainability Council will hold an in-person campus engagement session on April 11 from 12-1:30 p.m. It will be held at the Rec Center’s Ice Overlook Large Meeting Room, and light food and refreshments will be provided. No registration necessary.

If you're close to retirement, we want to help you feel ready. Join our Retirement Ready presentations to learn about managing your income, Social Security, medical coverage and more. Use CU's resources to plan your perfect retirement.

Reminder – use your vacation time

We know we sound like a broken record with these leave time reminders… but June is going to be here before we know it!

University staff: You can keep up to 44 days (352 hours) of vacation per fiscal year (July 1 - June 30). If you reach this limit, take or schedule vacation before June 30, or you will lose it.

Classified staff: Maximum accruals for Classified staff members depend on months of service. Check the Classified Staff Leave Policies chart for details.

All staff: Check your leave balances and plan to use any excess vacation time before July 1. Vacation requests need supervisor approval, so don’t wait until June. Contact your supervisor with any questions.

I&R Star and Constellation Awards

Joe Sanchez, Trisha Hallerberg and Lori Black (PDC) - nominated by Mike Turman
This team was integral in delivering a very challenging project, UCB000528, FLMG Rm 155 Classroom Renovation, which was struggling in the early stages of execution with a first time contractor on the �山�� campus. The project was severely behind schedule in the early stages which jeopardized this critical space being available for the spring semester 2025. This stellar team provided constant coaching and meticulous oversight of the contractor team to ensure submittals/RFIs were timely, construction activities were planned correctly, invoices were properly submitted, and communication was smooth across all stakeholders. They ensured this project met timeline and stayed on budget which enabled successful move-in for the spring semester to a state-of-the-art classroom facility.

Horticulture Team and General Maintenance Team (Outdoor Services) - nominated by Christian Parker
Thank you to the horticulture and general maintenance teams in FM Outdoor Services for coming in both Saturday 1/25/25 and Sunday 1/26/26 to hand shovel snow all weekend after a long work week. They all came in the Saturday 1/18/25 (MLK weekend) as well to hand shovel snow the week prior. These two teams work together hand shoveling snow to open up entrances to class buildings for staff and students, as well as any buildings with special events. They have a genuine concern and care for people's safety, and always do an outstanding job. I am privileged to know and work with these wonderful people.

Integrated Pest Management (Outdoor Services) - nominated by Robert Allen
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) provides outstanding customer service. We have had some uninvited visitors over here in Koelbel, and the IPM team has been all over it. Their response is quick, their attitudes are positive, and their consistent communication keeps me fully informed about how my situation is being handled and the results we are getting. Jessica Platt's excellent leadership and attention to detail shows in every aspect of her work and that of her very capable, diligent team. Keep on rockin!

Kevin Crosby (PDC) - nominated by Kristin Bostelman
Kevin has gone above and beyond over the past few weeks by picking up extra work to fill temporary gaps within the Engineering team - especially when it comes to construction inspections. First off, Kevin took time out of his holiday break to come to campus to facilitate inspections and to ensure that projects were able to continue moving forward. He has picked up more than his share of building and mechanical inspections over the past few weeks, while also managing his other engineering duties. Without Kevin's tremendous efforts, projects would have stalled, which would have cost several projects valuable time and money. Thank you for going above and beyond, Kevin!

Melissa Davis (Transportation) - nominated by Travor Smith
Every day, Melissa goes out of her way to make our team's day better. She has created a monthly newsletter, and features new drivers each month along with their accomplishments, and she has also created a quarterly award to recognize individuals who are "Above The Herd" standouts. I am grateful for her hard work and positivity, and I believe she deserves recognition for it.

Jake Brown (Transportation) - nominated by Craig Miller
With the many demands placed on my shop every day we rarely take time to say thank you however Jake showed his fortitude and willingness yesterday to ensure we had a bus up for transit. Despite the temperature being in the single digits and no room in the shop Jake performed admirably by replacing a starter outside late in the afternoon on a bus that was needed for today's transit operation. Thank you Jake!

Happy new year!

Dear Infrastructure and Resilience team,

I hope your 2025 is off to a great start! It was great to see so many of you at our annual I&R appreciation luncheon where we shared a hearty meal and honored this year’s award winners.

At the luncheon, Senior Vice Chancellor for Finance and Business Strategy (FBS) Todd Haggerty introduced himself and shared a few words about our recent organizational transition. I&R now reports to FBS and I am excited to be working with Todd more directly.

Last week, the I&R leadership team and some of their direct reports met for a retreat to focus on our mission, vision and values. I am proud to share that we have decided on our organization’s mission statement: We lead our beautiful campus to inspire student success. This powerful statement tells our peers what we do in a succinct, captivating way. We will continue to develop our vision and values as we identify the “why” and the “how” behind our mission.

Speaking of change, I want to acknowledge that our colleagues within Strategic Relations and Communications (SRC) had a department restructure last month. Several individuals from within SRC were laid off following the department’s shift in focus. These changes are isolated to SRC and I do not anticipate such significant restructuring within other departments.

The I&R leadership team also got a chance to interview the three finalists for the vice chancellor for sustainability role. I am on the search committee for this position and will be excited for any of the three finalists to start working at CU this semester.

I acknowledge there is a lot of construction on campus right now, and while this can impact how we get around, I am encouraged by all the change. It’s a reminder that we are working hard to reduce our deferred maintenance backlog and improve spaces for learning and living. Big shoutout to everyone helping make these projects happen – your hard work is literally building the future.

Finally, I want to recognize that February is Black History Month, a time to celebrate the significant contributions and achievements of Black Americans throughout history and acknowledge their vital role in shaping our nation's culture and progress. Let’s take a moment to reflect on and honor these contributions as we move forward.

Thanks for everything you do, and here’s to a great year ahead!

On Jan. 23, 2025 many outstanding team members were recognized for their significant contributions to the university this past year. I&R Star and Constellation Awards - Nov. and Dec. 2024

Regena Peltan (Transportation Services), nominated by Cheri Baumgartner

Regena was part of a big charter that Transportation had for the university. Regena received the highest of compliments sent by email from the University as well as the client. Regena's constant communication , and flexibility to please our customer went up and beyond and was very appreciated.

Alex Goff (CBS), nominated by Irma Bernard on behalf of Shelley Sheppeck (Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences building)

Since Alex has been assigned as custodian to our Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences building, Shelley writes that they have noticed a BIG difference in our bathroom cleanliness as well as overall appearance to the public areas of the building. Additionally, Alex presents with kindness and consideration as clients pass through the clinic and department. Thank you for all you do to keep our old building in the best shape as possible!

Matt Buck (PD&C), nominated by Blake Guyer (on behalf of Joan Gabriele)

Matt Buck managed a project for us this Summer, a re-carpeting/asbestos/partial remodel in Norlin Library S436 and associated offices.He was wonderful to work with. He was extremely communicative, knew what he was doing, and he handled all the little bumps that occur in construction projects with expertise and patience. We really appreciated the support Matt provided from beginning to end of the project.

Liz Goetz (CAD), nominated by Wayne Northcutt

Liz is always available to help. Specifically, she helps to make ArcGIS a tool that can be used for and by the Planning group. I believe her tireless support and positive attitude really allow PD&C to make big strides in data-informed decisions through data visualization.

Logan Floersch (Utility and Energy Services), nominated by Joshua Morse

Logan is a constant professional and always goes above and beyond to complete his work. He did outstanding work changing the booster feedwater pump, coming in on a day off to help get this pump back in service faster.

Peter Raemer (Transportation Services), nominated by Travor Smith

On July 31, 2024, Peter discovered a lost wallet while conducting a post-trip inspection after his Buff Bus driving shift. We worked together to locate the ID of the wallet owner, and searched the Colorado.edu email system with the hopes of finding them. It didn't take long to locate a possible match, and we were able to make contact with them via email to arrange a wallet drop-off. Peter was instrumental in locating the owner of the lost wallet and is very deserving of recognition for going above and beyond his expected job duties.

Carolina Pire (OCC), nominated by Crissy Bowen

Carolina is an incredible resource to the campus building proctors. She is professional, collaborative, and an excellent teacher. Carolina encourages innovation and is a genuinely authentic person. It is a pleasure to work with her to get tasks accomplished and to see �山��'s values being lived out.

Staff Appreciation Breakfast: Thursday, Dec. 12

The annual Employee Appreciation Breakfast will be held on Dec. 12 from 7 to 9:30 a.m. in the Glenn Miller Ballroom at the UMC. Donations of non-perishable food and personal care items will be collected on behalf of area pantries. Your Buff OneCard is required for admission.

Facilities Management workwear information

Stock FM workwear is now available at the Distribution Center Stores office. Additional items needed for work, such as jackets and hoodies, are available to order on a monthly basis. Read more about the FM workwear program.

Wrap up 2024

The new year is fast approaching, which means tax season is just around the corner. Before the year ends, verify that your personal information and pay is accurate now to ensure a worry-free tax season.

Important tasks for year-end payroll

Review and update your mailing address in the employee portal by Sunday, Dec. 15 to ensure you receive your W-2 and/or 1042-S forms.
Verify your Social Security number.

Review your W-4 and double-check your tax withholdings with the IRS Withholding Estimator. Reminder for international employees: You should not make changes to your W-4 without first consulting an international tax specialist.

�山�� wins the Way to Go Employer Champion Award!

This year, �山�� has been awarded the Way to Go Employer Champion Award by the Denver Regional Council of Government for our commitment to providing equitable transportation access for students, faculty and staff. I&R Annual Award nominations – due Nov. 1

Infrastructure and Resilience will be hosting our winter employee appreciation luncheon on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2025. As part of our event, we will be announcing our employee annual award winners. If you have noticed I&R employee(s) working to make the campus a better place to work, study or visit, please consider submitting a nomination for one of several awards described below. Individual staff winners will receive a plaque and a gift card. Student winners will receive a certificate and a gift card. Team winners will receive a group meal or a party. Winter preparation

We are very lucky to live and work in Colorado; it gives us the chance to enjoy some amazing weather. Though our summer temperatures are still around, the time to prepare for the changing weather is now. Our teams who work outside year-round – and do an amazing job maintaining our campus – and those who commute to campus should start planning now for the cooler weather. This includes checking your vehicle for the winter season, being mindful of the changing weather, and thinking about how you will navigate campus when the cold weather arrives. Finally, stay in touch with your team members during the winter months and make sure they are safe while at work.

�山�� Annual Security and Fire Safety Report

The 2024 �山��'s Annual Security and Fire Safety Report (ASFSR) is now available.

This report is required by a federal law known as the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, and contains policy statements and crime and fire statistics for the �山�� campus. Statistics from the past three years (2021-2023) are included for Clery Act crimes that were reported on campus, in non-campus buildings or on property owned or controlled by the university, and on public property within or immediately adjacent to campus. Also included are policy statements addressing crime reporting, fire safety, timely warnings, crime prevention programs and campus resource organizations.

You can receive the report in printed form by visiting the �山�� Police Department, 1050 Regent Drive, �山��, Colorado. You may also request a copy be mailed to you by emailing CU Clery Compliance Officer Nick Dokkin.

Be more aware of emergencies, sign up to receive campus alerts

Anyone with an active @colorado.edu email address is automatically registered to receive �山�� emergency alerts. These are sent when there is a confirmed immediate threat to the safety of those on campus or near campus in areas of high student populations, or when there is a change to the university’s operating status. To ensure receipt of text alerts, students are reminded to add or update their mobile phone numbers in Buff Portal, and employees are encouraged to do the same in MyCUInfo.

Depending on the nature and severity of the emergency, off-campus public safety agencies may send their own alerts. Read more and sign up for alerts.

FM Safety Committee

The FM safety committee meets the third Tuesday of every month to discuss general safety concerns, review safety reports and on-the-job injuries and recommend training needs and resources. If you are interested in attending a meeting or bringing an issue or idea that is safety related, please reach out to your area representative on the FM safety committee or contact our Safety Specialist Don Fitzpatrick.

Skillsoft outage – Sept. 6 through 12

CU’s online training platform, formerly known as Skillsoft, is undergoing a makeover. The new platform, called Skillsoft Percipio, will launch on Sept. 12. To ensure a smooth transition, please make sure all your team members complete any unfinished Skillsoft online training courses by 5 p.m. on Sept. 6. This deadline and system downtime is especially important for our new team members who may be trying to finish up required onboarding training courses.

Why it matters: As the university migrates to a new and improved learning management system, only completed course records will be transferred. Incomplete courses will not be migrated.

The current platform will be inaccessible from 5 p.m. Sept. 6 through 8 a.m. Sept. 12 while the upgrade is underway
The new platform, Skillsoft Percipio, will go live on Sept. 12.

Stadium access for home football games

Working in conjunction with the University of Colorado Police Department, the CU Athletics Department will begin securing the Stadium’s perimeter starting around 6 p.m. the night before all home football games. Department supervisors should submit a list of any personnel who will require overnight access to the Stadium for official University business (from 6 p.m. on the evening prior to the game up until 6 a.m. the morning of kick off). New bus lanes on Colorado Avenue

The city of �山�� has implemented changes to the lanes on Colorado Avenue that may affect your daily commute. These improvements are part of a broader effort to create a safer and more efficient transportation system for our entire community, and they are expected to strengthen the connection between Main Campus and East Campus. �山�� surplus retail storefront coming this fall

For more than a year, Jon Sherman, Denise Worthington, and other members of our FM property services team have been working on creating a new retail space to sell surplus property to internal CU departments as well as members of the public. The space is now in the final stages of construction, and the team hopes to have a “soft opening” for �山�� Buff OneCard holders later this fall. More information on the project will be posted in the coming weeks!

Celebrate the end of summer at the Summer Farewell Fest

All faculty, staff and their families are invited to say goodbye to summer with some fun and sun. The Summer Farewell Fest is Friday, Aug. 9, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Duane Lawn. Thank you for making the I&S picnic zero waste

Our recent Staff Appreciation event resulted in a 93% diversion rate thanks to the enthusiastic support from I&S employees and event planners. By using reusable dishes and silverware and scraping plates into a “food-scraps-only” bucket, we achieved zero waste. An event, household or operation is considered “zero waste” when 90% or more of its discards are diverted from the landfill.

As you may be aware, changes in acceptable compost feedstock made items like “compostable” plates, napkins and service-ware no longer acceptable. These rule changes made it nearly impossible to host zero waste events on campus for the last couple of years, so this really is a milestone accomplishment for campus. Thanks to all who made this possible!

Extreme Ownership Leadership Series: Register by August 15

Staff are once again invited to sign up for Extreme Ownership, a 12-week leadership development program for those in supervisory or lead positions. (Others can join with supervisor approval.) This program is based on the bestselling book by Ex-Navy SEALS Jocko Willink and Leif Babin, and offers invaluable leadership lessons from their combat experiences.

CU softball tournament

Once again, I&S will be participating in the annual CU Employee Softball Tournament! Join us at Gerald Stazio Softball Fields on Thursday, July 18 and Friday, July 19 to cheer on your I&S team as they take on teams from other units across campus. First pitches are tentatively scheduled for 4:30 pm. The tournament schedule will be published on the I&S employee webpage as soon as it's finalized. If you have questions, contact team captain Tim Lockhart.

Daily Camera, $12 annual unlimited digital access for CU staff

�山�� faculty and staff can receive a special rate annual subscription to the Daily Camera, costing just $12 for the first year, and $1 per month thereafter. You can claim the discounted rate by registering for an account with your �山�� employee email on the Daily Camera’s website. Use the “I am a teacher” button and use your colorado.edu email address when you register for an account.

Free week at the Rec Center: July 15 - 19

Recreation Services and the Infrastructure & Sustainability Inclusive Excellence Committee (ISIEC) is excited to announce a free week at the Main Campus Recreation Center (“the Rec”) from July 15-19! During this week, your Buff OneCard will provide complimentary access to all facilities at the Rec, including:

Cardio equipment
Weight room
Courts (basketball, tennis and pickleball)
Pools
All classes, including yoga, F45, Pilates, and Zumba

Additionally, we have planned a special event on July 16 featuring:

Free food and exciting prizes
Facility tours
Information sessions from WorkWell and the MOVE program

Morning Session: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Afternoon Session: 4 to 6 p.m.

Must present Buff OneCard to enter. Free entry is valid for CU staff members only. Family members and visitors may come along, but must pay a daily use fee of $10.

Register for �山��’s Buffalo Bicycle Classic scholarship bike ride

Since 2003, the Elevations Credit Union Buffalo Bicycle Classic (BBC) has raised $3.4 million dollars in scholarships for �山�� students. Join us for an incredible ride on Sunday, Sept. 9 through �山�� County, and help continue the legacy of the last 22 years supporting the College of Arts & Sciences BBC Scholarship Fund. With nine routes to choose from, the Buffalo Bicycle Classic has a ride for everyone.

CU faculty and staff members can use code CUSTAFF for $20 off, and CU students can use the code CUSTUDENTS23 for $50 off registration (valid through 9/1/24). CU students and staff must use their colorado.edu email when registering for the event to receive the discount. Also if you put together a team of 10 or more riders, there is an additional $15 off per rider ($15 will be refunded to each rider’s credit card once the 10th person has registered for the team).
