For the first time in nearly seven years, the �山�� Police Department is welcoming a new chief of police. Following a national search, Ashley Griffin will begin serving in the leadership role beginning on July 1. Griffin is expected to be sworn in this fall.

Griffin comes from the University of Texas at Austin, where she has served as assistant chief of police since January of 2024. Previously, Griffin was inspector and training coordinator at UT System Police for nearly eight years. She has been with the UT Austin Police Department since 2007, rising through the ranks from officer to sergeant before transitioning to the university system and then her current role as assistant chief.

“I am deeply honored to be selected to serve as the chief of police at �山�� and be part of the Division of Public Safety,” Griffin said. “I am excited for this new endeavor and will focus on developing relationships with the CU community, working collaboratively with all stakeholders and fostering an environment where students, staff, faculty and visitors are safe.”

Griffin is a graduate of the FBI National Academy. She holds a master’s degree in public safety from the University of Virginia and a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies from Indiana University, where she started her law enforcement career as a part-time officer. It was through that experience that Griffin said she saw firsthand the importance of establishing trust within the community she patrolled.

“Ashley Griffin is deeply committed to �山��’s holistic approach to public safety and will work to immediately understand and strengthen existing partnerships and procedures,” said Marlon Lynch, �山��’s vice chancellor for public safety.

“We were fortunate to have four viable finalists with varying backgrounds and experiences. Ashley’s direct experience in the university setting and proven ability of having a collaborative approach were attributes that contributed to her selection as our successful candidate,” Lynch added.

CUPD’s new chief comes from the flagship campus of the University of Texas system. UT Austin is a public research university with approximately 53,000 students, including about 10,000 graduate students.

Similar to �山��, UT Austin police staff many large events across campus. Griffin oversaw various divisions as assistant chief, including recruiting and special events.

“I am looking forward to supporting CU and the special events that are increasing on campus and to continuing the strong partnership with surrounding law enforcement agencies,” Griffin said. She will also focus on recruitment, training and wellness for first responders.

CUPD is a nationally accredited police agency operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Doreen Jokerst previously served as CUPD’s chief, before she left to become chief of police in Overland Park, Kansas, in October 2024.

Lynch thanked Interim Chief of Police John Monahan for serving in the role during the transition period, ensuring no disruption of public safety services to the campus community.

The �山�� Police Department will welcome Ashley Griffin as its new chief of police. The public safety leader comes from the University of Texas at Austin and will begin on July 1.

Provost Russell Moore today announced the appointment of Fernando Rosario-Ortiz as vice chancellor for academic resource management, effective April 1.

Rosario-Ortiz, a professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering, has served as interim dean of the School of Education since Jan. 1, 2024.

“Professor Rosario-Ortiz is emerging as one of �山��’s most effective leaders,” Moore said. “He has provided focused, stabilizing and conscientious leadership for our School of Education as its interim dean for the last 15 months. He brings to this new interim role well-developed fiscal and resource sensibilities, a talent for listening and a marvelous grasp of complexities, all of which will serve him well in developing resource strategies to drive our academic mission.”

The vice chancellor for academic resource management leads academic resource strategy and analysis in support of the university’s research and teaching missions. The incumbent coordinates strategic initiatives with the various directorates in the division of Strategic Resources and Support. The role also oversees the research infrastructure, the Graduate School, Continuing Education and �山�� Online.

Ann Schmiesing vacated the role of vice chancellor for academic resource management on March 1, 2025, to serve as interim vice chancellor for strategic initiatives in the office of Chancellor Justin Schwartz.

“I am honored and excited to join the talented team in Academic Affairs and for the opportunity to continue to work with Provost Moore,” Rosario-Ortiz said. “I look forward to serving my faculty colleagues, our colleges and schools, and �山��’s academic mission at this vital moment in the life of the university.”

To succeed Rosario-Ortiz, Moore named Elizabeth Dutro, associate dean of faculty in the School of Education, as interim dean of the school, to serve through June 30. Amanda Haertling Thein, selected after a national search, takes over as dean of the school on July 1.

“Elizabeth Dutro is a well-respected leader in the School of Education who has earned the trust of its faculty and staff,” Moore said. “She will continue the work of positioning the school to carry out its mission and prepare it for the arrival of incoming Dean Haertling Thein this summer.”

Professor Fernando Rosario-Ortiz will become the vice chancellor for academic resource management on April 1. He currently is the interim dean of the School of Education.

Chancellor Justin Schwartz has appointed Ann Schmiesing interim vice chancellor for strategic initiatives, effective March 1.

The newly created position is a campuswide resource, combining strategic oversight with high-level support to the chancellor, serving as a key advisor and liaison across �山��’s executive team. The interim vice chancellor for strategic initiatives will work across internal and external constituencies to advance campus goals and ensure ongoing and consistent success.

“I am delighted Ann has accepted this appointment to serve as our interim vice chancellor for strategic initiatives, working closely with me and other campus leaders on priority projects that will shape the direction of �山��,” Schwartz said. “Ann brings long experience—as a talented academic and an able, highly respected administrative leader on this campus and at CU Denver—to this important new role.”

Schmiesing recently returned to the �山�� campus after serving as the interim chancellor at CU Denver last fall.

“I’m excited and honored to serve as interim vice chancellor for strategic initiatives,” Schmiesing said. “I look forward to working collaboratively with our faculty, staff, students, shared governance organizations and external partners to advance �山��’s mission and impact.”

Schmiesing is currently the vice chancellor for academic resource management in the provost’s office—leading academic resource strategy and analysis in support of the university’s research and teaching missions. She coordinates strategic initiatives with the various directorates in the division of Strategic Resources and Support. She also oversees the Graduate School, Continuing Education, �山�� Online and research infrastructure.

Before assuming her current administrative role in the provost’s office, Schmiesing served as chair of the Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures (2007–11), director of the Sewall Residential Academic Program (2015–16) and dean of the Graduate School and vice provost for graduate affairs (2016–18).

She received the Excellence in Leadership and Service Award from the �山�� Faculty Assembly in 2016. She joined the �山�� faculty in 1995 and is a professor of German and Scandinavian studies.

“Ann is an exceptionally skilled leader and administrator, and it’s no surprise that the chancellor would tap her for this important new campus position,” Provost Russell Moore said. “Ann’s absence will leave a significant void in the Office of the Provost, but I am delighted for her and supportive of this move.”

Moore said he will announce a search process for an interim successor to Schmiesing soon.

Chancellor Justin Schwartz has appointed Andrew Mayock vice chancellor for sustainability, effective March 10 following an international search.

The newly created position will be charged with establishing a university-wide sustainability leadership role, forming partnerships with faculty, positioning �山�� as a national and global sustainability leader, directly assisting local communities to make Colorado the most sustainable state in the U.S. and funding priority sustainability initiatives through internal and external sources.

Mayock is the former chief sustainability officer for the United States government, where he led the Biden administration’s efforts on sustainability initiatives. Mayock has a proven track record and a strong reputation for driving solutions to the global challenges of climate change.

“I'm thrilled to have someone of Andrew Mayock’s caliber joining our campus,” said Schwartz. “In addition to a wealth of knowledge on sustainable policies and practices, he brings an understanding of how to build coalitions and lead effectively across large, complex organizations.”

During his tenure at the White House, Mayock focused on powering the government’s vehicles and buildings with clean energy, increasing supply chain decarbonization and resilience through the purchase of low-embodied carbon materials and increasing climate impact through domestic and international partnerships.

He will begin his duties a few weeks before the 32nd annual Campus Sustainability Summit, and in June �山�� will co-host the next Right Here, Right Now Global Climate Summit with UN Human Rights and the University of Oxford.

“I am honored to join the �山��, where this new role reflects the university’s steadfast commitment to creating a sustainable future for our students, faculty, staff and community,” Mayock said. “As we continue to navigate the pressing challenges of climate change and environmental stewardship, I am excited to collaborate with this talented community to foster innovative solutions, inspire bold action and continue to lead the way in sustainability practices—locally and globally.”

Mayock will bring his significant experience in the government and private industry to elevate �山��’s national and global sustainability profile.

�山�� is home to numerous research institutes and offers over 250 sustainability-related courses, while its operational units consistently push forward its ambitious climate goals:
